Vivo is a popular Chinese technology company known for making smartphones, smart accessories as well as other consumer electronics. The company is owned by BBK Electronics which also owns a group of other Chinese smartphone companies. Vivo has built a name for itself around providing smartphones that offer great value for money. As a result of this, they’ve managed to grow in the global smartphone market with ease. After lots of teasing and leaks, Vivo has finally launched the Vivo NEX 3, its latest highest-end offering.
The Vivo NEX 3 is built on the Vivo APEX concept that was released close to two years ago and it has finally materialized the dream. The Vivo NEX 3 is going to be the third generation commercial product from the Vivo APEX concept and it is packed with lots of crazy features that will wow anyone.
The Vivo NEX 3 comes with a distinctive notchless dual-curved Super AMOLED display that wraps around the sides and has minimal bezels at the top and bottom. It is still carrying on the Vivo APEX’s dream of having an all-screen phone. Apart from that, you get the top flagship processor, a good camera system, a large battery, a pop-up selfie camera, and an in-display fingerprint sensor amongst other high-end specs.

Display
Coming to the display which is the main feature of this phone, I can say that it is really mind-blowing and it is really close to achieving a true all-screen smartphone.
Upfront, you would notice the Waterfall FullView display with the dual curves around the sides expanding into infinity to give it a waterfall illusion when you take a look. The Vivo NEX 3 sports a large 6.89 inches Super AMOLED display that has an FHD resolution of 1080 x 2256 pixels and 363 pixels per inch density. It covers the DCI P3 color space and has support for HDR10 so you can watch high dynamic range content on this phone.
The phone has a whopping 99.6% screen-to-body ratio with it having very small noticeable bezels at the top and bottom sides. This gives users a near-perfect full view experience.
The display features the new E3 AMOLED panel that filters out harmful blue light and also reduces power consumption by up to 7% when compared to E2 AMOLED panels.
Also, there is an optical fingerprint sensor under the display for biometric authentication.
Design and Body
Looking at the phone, you’d notice how well Vivo designed the Vivo NEX 3, it is aesthetically pleasing and also has a premium build.
The phone comes in a glass sandwich build with an aluminum frame holding the front and back glass together. The frame is barely seen on the sides as the phone doesn’t have any mechanical buttons on there. The body has a thickness of 9.4 mm and weighs about 219 grams. This is quite on the high side but it is expected considering the large display and big battery.
As there are no mechanical buttons on the sides, Vivo deploys a feature called Touch Sense on the right side of the phone. It acts as a power button and volume rocker. The volume rockers are above and below the power button that has a textured surface on the aluminum frame. Not having a mechanical button has lots of concerns around it and that is why Vivo also keeps a tiny mechanical power button at the top side of the phone.
At the top, you’d find the 3.5 mm headphone jack with the mechanical pop-up mechanism besides the mechanical power button. The pop-up mechanism houses the selfie camera and an LED flash to help out when taking photos and videos. At the bottom, you’d find the USB Type C port, speaker grille, microphones, and the SIM card slot.
On the rear, you would find the triple camera setup in a circular ring with the LED flash below it and NEX’s branding at the bottom.
Processor and Memory
The Vivo NEX 3 is powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 855+ chipset. The octa-core chipset has 1 Kyro 485 Gold core clocked at 2.96 GHz, three Kyro 485 Gold cores clocked at 2.42 GHz, and four Kyro 485 Silver cores clocked at 1.8 GHz. The chipset is paired with the Adreno 640 GPU.
The processor is coupled with 8GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 128GB of fast UFS 3.0 internal storage with no support for a micro SD card.
The phone has a Vapor Chamber Cooling system that allows heat to transfer evenly across the phone’s entire body. It removes extra heat and cools your device.
Software
On the software front, the Vivo NEX 3 runs on Android 9 Pie with Funtouch OS 9.1 skin on top.
Camera
The Vivo NEX 3 has a triple rear camera setup and a single pop-up selfie camera.
The triple rear camera features a 64MP main camera with f/1.8 aperture, a 13MP telephoto camera with f/2.5 aperture, and a 13MP ultrawide camera with f/2.2 aperture. The ultrawide camera has Auto Focus which makes it double as a macro camera from 2.5 cm.
It can record videos at up to 4K resolution at 30 fps, 1080p resolution at up to 120 fps, and 720p resolution at up to 960 fps.
At the top, there is the pop-up selfie camera that has a 16MP camera sensor with an LED flash beside it. It can record videos in 1080p at 30 fps.
Battery and Charging
The Vivo NEX 3 is backed by a 4,500 mAh non-removable battery.
As for charging, it has support for 44W fast charging via its USB Type C port.
Network and Connectivity
There is support for 4G LTE network on the Vivo NEX 3 and it supports the following LTE bands: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7, 8, 12, 17, 18, 19, 20, 26, 28, 34, 38, 39, 40, & 41. There is a separate 5G model that comes with more RAM and storage.
The phone comes with dual-band Wi-Fi 5, Wi-Fi Direct, Wi-Fi hotspot, GPS, NFC, and Bluetooth 5.0.
