Amid the bullying threads between Android and iOS, Which device messaging app uses the green and blue bubbles has been a major subject. While iMessage is the default messaging app for apple users, google message RCS is for Android (iMessage Vs RCS)
Famously, Tim Cook responded to a person asking what they should do about their mom’s Android phone not accepting images and videos properly by saying, “Buy your mom an iPhone.”
For the past years, Google has run an ad campaign tagged #GetTheMessage which was to shame apple for not using the RCS (rich communication service ) popularly known as google message, and it seems to have paid off has Apple recently announced to support RCS starting 2024.
Specifically, Apple will be updated to support the RCS universal profile from the GSM association In the future iOS release starting from next year.
We don’t know why apple is coming up with this decision, But it appear Apple is planning ahead of legal disputes as the European Union EU has been cracking very hard on the anti-competitive practices by large Tech companies.
What is RCS?
RCS is a modern backup to the traditional SMS/MMS on newer generations of android devices. It has a lot of features like the tying indicators with read receipts, sending high resolution images, group chats.
“Later next year, we will be adding support for RCS Universal Profile, the standard as currently published by the GSM Association. We believe RCS Universal Profile will offer a better interoperability experience when compared to SMS or MMS. This will work alongside iMessage, which will continue to be the best and most secure messaging experience for Apple users.”
What does this mean?
Supporting RCS will allow iMessage users to securely interact with Android apps that include RCS, most notably Google Messages. With both platforms supporting the standard, iPhones and Android phones will finally be able to communicate properly, including read receipts, typing indicators, and transferring full-resolution images and videos. End-to-end encryption will also be possible.
According to the Statement, iMessage won’t change much for iMessage communication for iphone users. But when an Android user enters the chat, RCS support will kick in. Apple also calls out the lack of strong encryption in the RCS specifications and says it wants to work with GSMA member in adding that.
Green vs blue bubbles?
While this debate has lasted long, its one of the thread apple users used in degrading the messaging experience of RCS overtime.
But now that apple has decided to support RCS, there has been a lot of questions if android messages will show in green or blue.
There has not been any valid information about this, but different source claimed the green bubbles will still shows on Android devices.
