MediaTek has announced a new chipset designed for entry-level smartphones, and it is the MediaTek Helio G91 chipset. It is the newest addition to the Helio G series of chipsets, offering little upgrades across the board.
MediaTek Helio G91 Features
Being designed for entry-level smartphones, the MediaTek Helio G91 chipset is quite similar to other Helio G chipsets like the G88.
As for the CPU, the Helio G91 has an octa-core setup with two Cortex A75 cores clocked at 2.0 GHz and six Cortex A55 cores clocked at 1.8 GHz.
Pairing the CPU is the Mali G52 MC2 GPU which is also clocked at 1.0 GHz.
The SoC is built on a 12nm fabrication process by TSMC which is a bummer as it is not as efficient as it used to be.
The key upgrade here is the improved ISP that allows the chipset to support a 108MP camera sensor.
The MediaTek Helio G91 supports LPDDR4X RAM with a maximum size of 8GB being supported. Sadly, it doesn’t support UFS storage so it’s stuck on the slower eMMC.
As for connectivity, this chipset misses out on 5G as it is just limited to 4G LTE which is not a big problem in the entry-level segment.
Generally, this is a fairly decent chipset and I think MediaTek focused on making it good enough for most entry-level smartphones.
MediaTek has only just announced the chipset, and as of now, there is no info on when we will see the chipset in action on a phone. However, I expect manufacturers wanting affordable entry-level smartphones to snap this chipset up.
