There have been controversies on the social media lately wether the 5G Technology is the cause of spread of the pandemic virus COVID19.

On Saturday, Nigerians woke up to a viral message that was passed across that the 5G network is one of the tools that enhances COVID19’s spread.



The viral message has made a lot of people to catch this pandemic fear. In Liverpool on Friday, a 5G tower was set on fire over these bizarre conspiracy theories that 5G was the carrier of COVID19 same thing happened in Birmingham, as a 70-foot mast holding a 5G broadband network was burnt.

However, On twitter, former Aviation minister and senator dino melaye tweeted about it, and it made the post gained more momentum of about 800 retweet and 3,000likes.

What is 5G Technology?


Before we dive into this discussion, it is good we know what is 5G Technology is.
5G stands for fifth-generation cellular wireless. Its an upgrade from 4G LTE which uses ‘massive MIMO(multiple inputs, multiple outputs) large antennas that can send and receive more data simultaneously as it is not transmitted via CABLES.

Is 5G Technology Dangerous to Health?

According to the world health organisation, WHO in 2005 raised the alarm about the electromagnetic field (EMF) sources. WHO claims that exposure to EMF sources can cause Electromagnetic Hypersensitivity (EHS)
symptoms mostly experienced includes redness, tingling, and burning sensations) as well as neurasthenic and
vegetative symptoms (fatigue, tiredness, concentration difficulties, dizziness, nausea, heart palpitation, and digestive disturbances).

On the other hand, coronavirus is just like any other virus, but the COVID19 was said to be more deadly.5G network, as noted by WHO, 5G could cause health issues but looking it from a broader view, we could tell, the COVID 19 does not have a direct link with the 5G Technology as there have not been any scientific proofs to back it up.

Is There 5G Technology in Nigeria?

There has been news that MTN is plotting to deploy its first 5G network here in Nigeria. Meanwhile, the federal government has denied they have not given any telecoms license to mount 5G.
