Apple launches new 14-inch & 16-inch MacBook Pro: Everything you need to know

Yesterday, Apple launched the new MacBook Pro for this year, 2021. It comes in two different sizes which are 14-inch and 16-inch. The MacBook Pro 2021 comes with lots of new changes in the display, the battery, the ports, the battery, and also most importantly the processor. They are now powered by a set of 2nd gen Apple Silicon chipsets which brings massive improvements over the 1st gen M1. In this article, I’ll go through everything you need to know about the new 14-inch and 16-inch 2021 MacBook Pro. Let’s get right into it.



Design-wise, the new MacBook Pro 2021 comes with some key changes we can’t dismiss. It now has 100% recycled aluminum in the enclosure that is curved around the sides just like previous models. It has a thickness of 22.12cm (8.71 inches) and it weighs 1.6kg (3.5 pounds) for the base model as it is subject to change depending on the configurations & size. As for the inside, the new MacBook Pro has a redesigned keyboard nestled within an all-black background. The controversial Touch Bar has now been replaced with standard function keys.



The display is another department where the 2021 MacBook Pro got upgraded and redesigned. On the 14-inch model, it is a 14.2 inches Liquid Retina XDR display with a resolution of 3024×1964 pixels. On the 16-inch model, it is a 16.2 inches Liquid Retina XDR display with a resolution of 3456×2234 pixels. They both feature mini-LED backlighting, which features a cluster of 10,000 mini-LEDs for precise local dimming and better contrast. Both models also feature a ProMotion up to 120Hz refresh rate. As for brightness, they have 1600 nits peak brightness and 1000 nits sustained brightness. They both can display up to 1 billion colors and full Display-P3 wide color coverage. HDR is also supported on both models.


The display now has a notch with shrunk bezels around the panel. The notch houses the new 1080p HD camera for FaceTime and video calls.

Memory & Storage

As for the memory, the MacBook Pro 2021 has a base of 16GB of unified memory and it can be configured up to 32GB on the M1 Pro or up to 64GB on the M1 Max. As for storage, there is a base model of 512GB and it can go all the way up to 8TB. Apple is now even faster SSDs capable of up to 7.4GB/s read speeds.


The new MacBook Pro is powered by the 2nd Apple Silicon chips which are the M1 Pro and M1 Max. The M1 Pro SoC has a base 8-core CPU and 14-core GPU which can be configured up to 10-core CPU & 16-core GPU. The M1 Max SoC has a base 10-core CPU and 24-core GPU and can be configured up to 10-core CPU and 32-core GPU. Both the 16-inch and 14-inch models can support the M1 Pro and M1 Max.


The new M1 Pro and M1 Max chipset offer up to 3.7X faster CPU performance and up to 13X faster graphics performance when maxed out.

Battery Life & Charging

The 2021 MacBook Pro also got an improved battery life when compared to the previous gen. The 16-inch model can do up to 21 hours of video playback and 14 hours of web browsing while the 14-inch model can do 17 hours of video playback and 11 hours of web browsing.
To charge the new MacBook Pro, you get a 67W USB-C charger if you get a 14-inch model with the base M1 Pro chip or a 96W if you get any of the other CPU models. On the 16-inch model, you get a 140W USB-C charger. A USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable (2m) is present in the box.

Ports & Connectivity

Ports used to look like something that might eventually go extinct on the MacBooks but Apple has decided to bring back more ports on the new MacBook Pro. You are getting a full-size HDMI port, three USB-C Thunderbolt 4 ports, a full-size SDXC card slot, and a 3.5 mm headphone jack. The MagSafe port has been returned as it now joins the USB-C ports in being able to fast charge your new MacBook Pro.

External Display


You can now power up to two 6K Pro display with the M1 Pro MacBook Pro and up to three 6K Pro display as well as a 4K display with the M1 Max MacBook Pro thanks to the ports and improved graphics.


The MacBook Pro 2021 now comes with a new sound system that features a six-speaker system consisting of two tweeters and four force-canceling woofers. This enables the speakers to now support spatial audio for Dolby Atmos. The new machine also features “studio-quality” microphones with a reduced noise floor compared to the previous generation.

The 14-inch MacBook Pro starts at $1,999 while the 16-inch starts at $2,499. They are already available for pre-order on Apple online store and will arrive & become available in stores on October 26.
