Alcatel is a French smartphone manufacturer that is owned by Nokia and is used under license by TCL Technology, a Chinese technology company. Today, Alcatel has decided to launch the Alcatel 3 (2019) which comes in as the successor to the original Alcatel 3 that was launched a year ago in 2018.

Design and Body

Looking at the Alcatel 3 (2019), you can see that it is well designed and has a premium look on it for a phone that is not expensive. The phone is quite sleek thanks to its lightweight build and slim body with it coming in at 145 grams and 8 mm. The phone has a metal frame with curved edges around the rear of the phone which makes it feel slimmer and more sleek.

On the sides of the phone, you’d find the power button and volume rockers seated at the right with the SIM and micro SD card slot on the left. On the rear, you’d find the dual camera setup with a LED flash above the fingerprint sensor. On the top and bottom sides, you’d find the charging port as well as the 3.5 mm headphone jack.

Display

Coming to the display, the Alcatel 3 2019 comes with a 5.94 inches IPS LCD display with 19.5 by 9 aspect ratio and a water drop notch at the top. It also has an 82.2% screen to body ratio so the bezels around the screen are quite minimized. The display has an HD+ resolution of 720 x 1560 pixels with a 289 pixels per inch density. As for protection, the screen is covered with Asahi Dragontail Glass so you can expect it to be a bit scratch resistant and immune to easy damage.

The screen has a peak brightness of about 500 to 600 nits so you won’t have viewing problems when you are using the phone outside as long as you’re not under direct sunlight.

Processor and Memory

Under the hood, the Alcatel 3 (2019) is powered by the octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 439 (12nm) processor. The processor has 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.95 GHz and another 4 Cortex-A53 cores clocked at 1.46 GHz.

The Snapdragon 439 is paired with the Adreno 505 GPU which makes sure you have a nice gaming experience.

The processor is paired with either 3GB or 4GB of RAM and either 32GB or 64GB of internal storage with a hybrid micro SD card slot available for expansion of up to 128GB.

Camera

There is a dual rear camera setup that features a 13MP main camera with f/2.0 aperture and a 5MP secondary camera with f/2.4 aperture. It has a dedicated LED flash which can come in handy in dark environments.

On the front, there’s an 8MP selfie camera with f/2.4 aperture and ¼ sensor size. There’s no dedicated LED flash for the selfie camera.

As for videos, the rear camera can record in 480p, 720p, and 1080p resolutions while the selfie camera is maxed out at 720p resolution. 

The camera takes quite some good photos if you’re in a perfect scenario but it is not really spectacular when compared to more expensive phones with better cameras.

Battery and Charging

As for the battery, the Alcatel 3 (2019) comes with a 3,500 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery which promises up to 18 hours of talk time. As for charging, there is no support for fast charging as the phone takes about 4 hours to charge fully. It has a micro USB port for charging which is quite outdated at this point.

The battery life is quite good if you are not a heavy user and it should last throughout the day, for you to recharge at night once you get home.

Network and Connectivity

There is support for 4G LTE networks on the Alcatel 3 2019 and it supports the following LTE bands: 1, 3, 7, 8, 20, and 28. As for connectivity, there’s support for Wi-Fi, Wi-Fi Direct, Bluetooth 4.2, GPS, FM radio, USB On-The-Go, and NFC (market dependent).

As for software, the Alcatel 3 (2019) runs on Android 8.1 Oreo straight out of the box and it is upgradable to Android 9 Pie immediately after you turn on the phone. The software is quite clean but it has some Alcatel pre-installed apps on it.
