Sony is well known for making different tech products ranging from gaming consoles to cameras to camera lenses to smartphones to smart accessories and other consumer electronics. Today, we’ll be talking about one of their newly released product in the Android smartphone market. Sony has announced the Sony Xperia XZ1 alongside the Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact at IFA 2017.
The Sony Xperia XZ1 alongside the Xperia XZ1 Compact are going to be the latest flagship smartphones from the Japanese company. The Xperia XZ1 is going to be the successor to the original Xperia XZ that was released around this time last year.
Looking at the features of this phone, it is surely an upgrade over the previous flagship and it is now up to par with current flagship smartphones from competitors in the market. The Sony Xperia has some of the major smartphone flagships specs and it even manages to add some unconventional high-end tech found in other Sony products.

Design and Body
Design-wise, the Sony Xperia XZ1 is not one of the flashiest on the market as Sony are known for not following popular trends and rather, sticking to their guns.
The phone comes in an aluminum body and has a thickness of 7.4 mm and weighs about 155 grams. Holding the phone in your hands, you’d notice how sleek and premium it feels. It is available in four different colors: Black, Warm Silver, Venus Pink, and Moonlit Blue.
On the rear, you’d notice the single rear camera at the top left corner with the LED flash and laser autofocus module beside it at the top center. There is also an NFC tag at the rear of the phone so you can use the phone to pay in some stores. Apart from that, the only thing at the rear is Sony’s branding at the center.
On the side, you’d find the new antenna lines, the physical shutter button, the volume rockers, and the big power button that has a fingerprint sensor embedded in it. At the top, you’d find the 3.5 mm headphone jack as well as a secondary microphone. On the bottom side, you’d find the USB Type C port and a microphone.
Overall, the Sony Xperia XZ1 has nice build quality, it feels sleek and premium in the hands and it is quite slim and light-weighted.
Display
Coming to the display, Sony has been known to make one of the best smartphone displays in the Android market and this doesn’t disappoint.
The Sony Xperia XZ1 is sporting a 5.2 inches IPS LCD display that has a FHD resolution of 1080 x 1920 pixels and a 424 pixels per inch density. This is a new panel and now, it has support for HDR10 so you can watch high dynamic range content from Netflix, Amazon Prime Video, and other supported streaming services.
The screen is a flat one and it is protected by the state-of-art Corning Gorilla Glass 5 which is scratch resistant and immune to easy damage. Being a flat display, it will be very easy for you to apply screen protectors if you want to.
The display has support for Sony’s Triluminos and X-Reality engine technologies.
As for brightness, it can go up to 575 nits which is quite decent.
Processor and Memory
Under the hood, the Sony Xperia XZ1 is powered by the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 octa-core processor. The processor has 4 main Kyro cores clocked at 2.45 GHz and 4 efficiency Kyro cores clocked at 1.9 GHz. The processor is paired with the Adreno 540 GPU which is one of the most powerful mobile graphics units available. The processor is quite powerful enough to go through any day-to-day tasks with no problem. The phone also has a nice gaming experience thanks to the 1080p resolution and the powerful GPU.
As for memory and storage, the phone comes with only 4GB of RAM and 64GB of fast UFS 2.1 storage. The memory and storage are quite sufficient to make multitasking an easy task. As for storage expansion, there is only a shared micro SD card slot available if you get the dual-SIM model.
Software
As for software, the Sony Xperia XZ1 comes running on Android 8.0 Oreo and there’s going to be future software updates available.
Camera
Coming to the camera which is one of the main features people look forward to in any Sony flagship smartphone, the Sony Xperia XZ1 performs quite well.
On the rear, you’d find the single-camera setup that features a 19MP IMX400 ExmorRS sensor dubbed the Motion Eye camera. The camera takes nice photos in decent conditions.
As for videos, the rear camera can record 4K at 30 fps, 1080p at 30 or 60 fps and 720p at up to 960 fps. The video quality is decent and you have the option to record in h.265 codec which gives you a smaller file.
On the front, there’s a 13MP selfie camera that has an f/2.0 aperture and is 22mm wide. It can record videos at 1080p at 30 frames per second.

On the inside, the Sony Xperia XZ1 comes with a 2,700 mAh non-removable Li-Ion battery. As for charging, it has support for 18W fast charging and Quick Charge 3.0 which can take the phone up to 60% in about 30 minutes of charging. There are also different software features that help you have better battery life.
