During the Far Out event which saw Apple launch the new iPhone 14 series, the Apple also unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra. The new watch was unveiled alongside the Apple Watch Series 8 and Watch SE.
The Apple Watch Ultra is Apple’s first ever rugged fitness watch so it fits into a new category of a smartwatch for Apple.

When compared to other smartwatches that Apple has launched, the Apple Watch Ultra is in a league of its own. It is one of the best-rugged fitness watches available on the market right now.
Display and Design
The Apple watch ultra came in a 49mm case made out of titanium which is one of the most durable materials out there. It has a raised edge that helps to protect the display from scratches and other damages.
Talking about the display, it is the biggest and brightest ever on an Apple Watch. It has a 1.92 inches Retina LTPO OLED panel that has a peak brightness of up to 2,000 nits. The apple watch ultra display is protected with a flat sapphire crystal glass that is scratch resistant and durable.
To utilize the larger display, Apple has created a new watch face called “Wayfinder”. It show a lot more information and also is easily customizable to change how you can use it depending on where you are.
Being a rugged smartwatch, let’s talk about the Apple Watch Ultra’s endurance. The watch is MIL-STD-810H certified for; temperature shock, sand and dust, immersion, ice, rain, low pressure, contamination by fluids, humidity, and shock. It can also go as low as -20° C and as high as 55° C without any problems.
The watch also has WR100 and EN13319 certification so you can use it when diving and playing other water sports like wakeboarding and kite surfing. If you like diving, then you’ll appreciate the new built-in depth gauge that can show water temperature, maximum depth reached, present depth, and time spent underwater.
Battery
As for battery life, Apple makes sure this has the best. It has a 542 mAh Li-Ion battery. This number count sometimes does not translate to really good battery life but that isn’t the case here. The apple watch has 36 hours battery expected normally with always on display, constant heart rate monitoring, and automatic workouts. Also later this year, Apple will launch an Ultra Low Power Mode that should give up to 60 hours of usage on a full charge.
Processor
The Apple Watch Ultra uses a new S8 chip and all units have GPS and LTE connectivity (w/ eSIM). There are three microphones on the watch and Apple says that will improve hearing when using the watch in extreme conditions.
On the left-hand side of the case, the watch has a new customizable Action button in orange color. It can be to access Compass Waypoints, Workouts, or Backtrack. On the left-hand side, is an extra speaker that pushes out an 86-decibel siren in the case of an emergency.
On the right-hand side, you’d find the usual digital crown and home button. The crown is a light bigger now with a better grip.
Apple Watch Ultra Price and Availability
The Apple Watch Ultra is priced for $799 which is quite expensive for a smartwatch. It will be available for shipping from September 23. It comes in three bands which are Ocean Band, Trail Loop, and Alpine Loop.
